The live version of The Saints are Coming video, taped at the SuperDome in October of 2006, can be purchased at iTunes by clicking on the image below. This performance/song was nominated for a Grammy this year. The song is great, but the video really rocks.

I love this creative video set to the U2 / Green Day version of The Saints are Coming. It has been out on YouTube for quite a while, but I wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to get yanked for some sort of copyright violation before I linked to it on my blog. I really think this video captures the true spirit in which the song was performed at the Superdome last Oct.

I was wondering if the original lyrics had been altered for the live performance of “The Saints are Coming” by Green Day and U2 at the Superdome last September, and finally they have published those lyrics on the U2.com site. The changes are subtle, but meaningful (in that they speak directly to the Hurricane Katrina aftermath tradgedy). The new lyric is “When the night watchman lets in the thief, what’s wrong now?” And, of course the house of the Rising Sun lead in was “new” – In fact, my recollection is that when they sang the live version, they replaced “Rising Sun” with “Superdome”, which was also meaningful to the situation.

There is also a ‘rap’ Bono inserts before A drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief… that goes like this:
New birth, rebirth, (Trombone Shorty),
Livin like birds in the magnolia trees, child on a rooftop,
Mother on her knees, her sign reads – Please, I am an American!

Music Rising High Tonight

They – U2 and Green Day together – will be performing Beautiful Day, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and The Saints Are Coming. There are a few short clips of the bands rehearsing in the Superdome on this video. There is also another video – listed just below the one above on the ABC News site – that has a minute or so of raw footage of the bands rehearsing. I am so excited!! This is going to be awesome.

U2 and Green Day Unite to Benefit Music Rising on MNF Pre-game Show

It’s kind of old news by now, but I still thought the topic deserved a mention. U2 and Green Day are probably my two favorite bands currently, so I can’t wait to see them live on stage together. What a great cause they are promoting also, Music Rising, which was founded by Edge to assist New Orleans area musicians after Katrina. The ESPN Monday Night Football game between the Saints and the Falcons will be the first NFL game played in the Louisiana Superdome since Katrina struck. The pre-game show will air from 7pm to 8:30 pm EDT, and it looks like the segment with U2 and Green Day will show at the very end (8:20 – 8:30pm). For more details see the complete press release.

The photo above, from the U2 non-subscription site, is of U2 and Green Day band members crossing the street in front of the Abbey Road Studios. According to the news on the U2.com site, U2 and GreenDay have been reheasing together recently at the Abbey Road Studios in London (where U2 has been recording some new songs!!!). At least one of the songs that they will perform next Monday for the benefit will be a rendition of The Skids song “The Saints are Coming”. I am not familiar with that song, but the lyrics (courtesy of the Into The Valley… site) to the original are below.
