Obama delivered a new speech this week, dubbed Reclaiming the American Dream, which focused on his plan to provide relief to middle class and working families.
“What is unique about America is that we want these dreams for more than ourselves – we want them for each other. That’s why we call it the American dream….When our fellow Americans are denied the American dream, our own dreams are diminished.” This statement rings so true for me. I know that my ability to realize the American dream is slipping away steadily. Simply stated, the cost of living is increasing much faster than my salary. And I am fortunate enough to have a good paying, relatively stable job. I know that there are so many less fortunate than I that are suffering acutely from bearing the load of generating profits for banks and stockholders – the elite of our society.
This speech pulls together many of the talking points and themes of previous Obama speeches, and also adds more ‘teeth’ and specificity to the plan for not just leveling the playing field for American workers, but for changing the entire game. From providing tax relief to both middle and lower income families, to protecting families from bankruptcy and foreclosure and abusive lending practices, to affordable health care and retirement security, Obama’s plan addresses all of the circumstances that are negatively impacting all but the most privileged Americans.
You can read the entire transcript of the speech here, and view a video excerpt of the speech below. If you are struggling to keep up with the cost of living as I am, this speech is worth a looking at.
Here is another video, just posted this morning, where Barack is expaining his plan to a small group of supporters.
