The New Media Consortium on Second Life

I was poking around on the the Second Life web site looking for information about how the Second Life environment is being used for educational efforts, and non-profit charitable causes when I came across this wonderful video showcasing a project done by the Electric Sheep Company.

NMC Campus: Seriously Engaging video

The New Media Consortium (NMC), located in Austin, TX, “is an international 501(c)3 not-for-profit consortium of nearly 250 learning-focused organizations dedicated to the exploration and use of new media and new technologies. The consortium serves as a catalyst for the development of new applications of technology to support learning and creative expression, and sponsors programs and activities designed to stimulate innovation, encourage collaboration, and recognize excellence among its member institutions. Through its many projects, its comprehensive website, and its series of international conferences, the NMC stimulates dialog and understanding through the exploration of promising ideas, technologies, and applications. As a central part of its mission, the NMC encourages and supports innovation in the pursuit of effective collaboration, especially in the activities and projects in which it plays a leadership role.”

The NMC Campus Observer site keeps everyone up to date regarding current events. It features a blog, a campus directory page with member’s RL and SL names, and their organizational affiliations. They also have a calendar page with the NMC Campus Calendar (Google powered calendar which I found most interesting) that lists NMC SL events. A links page lists a feed of their most recently tagged del.icio.us sites, and includes a link to the entire collection of del.icio.us tags. And also worth mentioning is the well organized, content-rich wiki included as their ‘Guide’ page.

In order to visit the campus you have to join the NMC Guests group. Visit the Join page on the NMC Campus Observer site for instructions and access to the web form to apply for group membership.
