Watching CNN’s coverage of the participation in the Selma Voting Rights March Commemoration by both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, it might lead one to think that the Democrats are only interested in the Black vote, and have no other reason for taking part in these activities. I prefer to believe what Hillary and Barack state as their reasons for being in Selma to honor the civil rights activists who had the courage to stand up for justice and equality in the face of huge odds; that neither of them could be viable presidential candidates in 2008 without the courage of the leaders and participants in the civil rights movement.
I am encouraged that there are so many excellent candidates participating in the presidential primaries this term. Choices are good! I look forward to hearing Obama, Clinton, Edwards, Biden, and Richardson discuss their views on the critical issues facing our country. This is a great set of candidates, with some well thought out ideas for healing the divisions within our country and getting us back on a positive, innovative, and secure track. And if this team of candidates stumbles, or is eaten up by the press, we have Gore and Feingold waiting in the wings. What could be better? I think of our current ‘team’ as the Dream Team. We are much stronger together than divided. We can all work together to bring about positive change, and it is so much more effective when we have so many strong, well-informed, and intelligent leaders to show us the way.
Obama gave a wonderful speech for the commemoration yesterday. Click here to see some of Obama’s speech at the Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, courtesy of CNN. Click here to read the transcript of the speech.
