Pedro’s comments reveal the arrogance of poverty; as if poverty were something to wear as a badge of honor rather than something to overcome.

The Irish know poverty. Bono wasn’t born a rich man in a rich country; he likely knows poverty and violence.

Upon reading the comment from Pedro, my first reaction was to jump to Bono’s defense. I thought about mentioning that Bono has been married to his high school sweetheart for over 20 years, and that he has four beautiful children. I also thought about pointing out that he has been with his high school friends and fellow band members for over 20 years also.

He certainly has a big ego. What rock star doesn’t? He is not perfect (thank God he is a human, just like the rest of us). But he chooses to try to do the right thing. He walks the walk, and he talks the talk. But here I go….defending someone who needs no defense. His actions speak louder than his words, and U2′s contribution to the music world is tremendously significant.

I, for one, am grateful to be alive at the same time as Bono. His music speaks to my heart, and his cause is a just one.

I don’t remember Bono every asking anybody to like HIM-if that is the only thing you take from him you are quite sadly misguided.

Bono has a message we all need to hear. I don’t care what Bono’s personal adgenda is in this fight or even if he has one. He has a message that can and will make a difference if heard by enough people that care. What a world we could live in if all of us heard God’s message, delivered by Bono. God’s vision and plan is so much larger than us and so much more than we could ever imagine. Bono’s message is about love, not about himself.
The world could use a few more Bono’s. His speach was amazing!!

Pedro,

I can understand the conflict with a rich guy choosing to use his free time campaigning for ending poverty. There is a certain irony to that.

However, I don’t support ONE because of Bono. I support it because I support human rights, equality, and justice. Supporting human rights is not an exclusive club. You don’t have to be poor to want to help the poor.

I don’t know what Bono’s personal reasons are for wanting to end poverty and social injustice. I am just glad that he chooses to use the platform that his fame affords him to support a cause that I am passionate about. It’s not about the man. It is about the cause. At least for me.
